SUMMARY:250 Years of Buttons
DESCRIPTION:Many people tend to not think about buttons until one falls off\, but we’re missing out on some fascinating historical objects: Buttons hold a special—and fascinating—place in textile history. They play a historical role throughout the country’s history and in Connecticut’s. \nThis special program will look at the last 250 years of history from the lens of these interesting and often beautifully crafted pieces. Did you know that button collecting dates back to the time of the founding of our country? Learn about Geroge Washington’s special request to the Scoville brothers\, Queen Victoria’s black glass buttons\, buttons made by Colt Manufacturing in the 1950s\, and Avon products of the 1970s. Presenter Laurel Durso will touch on a variety of historical topics and present a display of antique buttons of various types and materials that help tell the story of America’s 250 year history. Feel free to come early to enjoy the extensive display. \nIf you have buttons that have been passed down to you\, bring them along! Questions are welcome and help will be provided identifying the age\, material\, and other interesting details about any buttons that are brought in. \nAdditional parking can be found in the rear of the building. The program is free to members\, with a suggested donation of $5 for others. Refreshments will be served. \nLaurel Durso is the president of the Connecticut State Button Society. She has a personal collection of 20\,000 buttons. The Connecticut State Button Society is dedicated to the history\, preservation\, and collecting of antique and vintage buttons.
